Preparing For Viva - Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Students onlyCode: GRO-012, Offered By: Research Study Skills
The aim of this seminar is to give some useful information about the viva exam, what to expect and how to prepare for it. The reasons for having a viva and how it should be approached will first be considered. We will then consider ways to keep the subject of the thesis "alive" until the viva. The importance of reading to prepare for the viva will be emphasised; reading the thesis, reading background literature cited therein, reading recent relevant papers published after its submission and reading relevant papers published by the examiners. The choice an appointment of examiners, the role of the supervisor post thesis submission and the pros and cons of having a mock viva will be discussed. Some practical tips for a good viva will follow, including how to anticipate the questions that might be asked, generic viva questions and what to do if you don't know the answer. The conduct and progress of the viva will also be described, what to take to the viva and how to behave. We will finish with a discussion of the possible outcomes of the viva, what they mean and how to deal with them.
